Higher Dietary Copper Intake Linked to Lower Odds of Hearing Loss in US Adults

A new analysis of US national nutrition survey data ties higher dietary copper intake to lower odds of both speech-frequency and high-frequency hearing loss, with the association appearing only in women.

What we eat has long been suspected of playing a role in how well we hear as we age. Nutrients involved in antioxidant defenses and nerve function are of particular interest, because the delicate sensory cells of the inner ear are vulnerable to oxidative stress and have little capacity to regenerate once damaged.

Copper is one of those nutrients. It is a trace element found in foods like shellfish, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and organ meats, and it supports enzymes involved in antioxidant protection and nervous system function. Yet evidence connecting copper intake to hearing has been thin, which is the gap a research team in China set out to address using American health survey data.

Background: Why the Researchers Looked at This

Hearing loss is usually described by the sound frequencies it affects. Speech-frequency hearing loss involves the pitch range most important for understanding conversation, while high-frequency hearing loss affects higher pitches, such as birdsong or consonant sounds like s and t, and is often the first range to decline with age or noise exposure.

Previous research had examined nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, and various vitamins in relation to hearing, but the evidence for copper specifically was, in the authors' words, insufficient. Because copper contributes to antioxidant enzymes that help protect cells from damage, a plausible biological pathway exists by which dietary copper could relate to the health of the inner ear.

The team turned to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, known as NHANES, a large program run by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that combines interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests in a sample designed to represent the American population.

How the Study Was Done

The researchers analyzed data from 2,777 adult participants in the 2015-2016 NHANES cycle. Dietary copper intake was estimated from participants' reported food consumption, and hearing was measured with audiometric testing, allowing the team to classify speech-frequency and high-frequency hearing loss separately.

To test the association, they used multivariate logistic regression, a statistical method that estimates the odds of an outcome while adjusting for other factors such as age, sex, chronic disease, and noise exposure. They also used restricted cubic spline models to check whether the relationship was linear or curved, and ran subgroup analyses to see whether the association differed by sex, age, or other characteristics.

What the Researchers Found

In the fully adjusted model, higher dietary copper intake was associated with lower odds of both types of hearing loss. For speech-frequency hearing loss, the odds ratio was 0.71 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.55 to 0.91, and for high-frequency hearing loss it was 0.74 with an interval of 0.60 to 0.91. In plain terms, adults who consumed more copper were roughly 26 to 29 percent less likely to have hearing loss in these ranges than would be expected otherwise.

When participants were divided into four groups by copper intake, those in the higher intake groups generally showed lower odds of hearing loss than the lowest group, with statistically significant trends across the groups for both outcomes. Spline models found no evidence of a curved relationship, suggesting a steady, linear association rather than a threshold effect.

The most striking nuance came from the subgroup analyses. The inverse association between copper intake and hearing loss was statistically significant only in women, and the interaction by sex was itself significant for speech-frequency hearing loss. Associations across subgroups defined by age, chronic disease, and noise exposure were less consistent, with most interaction terms not statistically significant.

What It Means for People with Hearing Loss

This study adds hearing to the list of reasons to eat a varied, nutrient-rich diet, but it should not be read as a prescription. A cross-sectional design captures a single moment in time, so it cannot show that copper intake causes better hearing, only that the two travel together in this sample of US adults.

Still, the findings fit a broader pattern in hearing research linking overall nutritional status to hearing health, and they raise interesting questions about why the association appeared mainly in women. For anyone already noticing difficulty hearing conversation, the more immediate message is that diet is one piece of a larger picture that includes noise protection, regular hearing checks, and timely treatment.

Diet May Relate to Prevention, but Existing Hearing Loss Needs Its Own Answer

Findings like these speak to prevention, yet many of the adults in this study already had measurable hearing loss in the very range that carries conversation. For that group, no change in diet restores what has been lost, and the practical question becomes how to hear speech clearly again. Limitations of This Research

The cross-sectional design cannot establish cause and effect, and dietary intake was self-reported, which introduces recall error. The data come from a single two-year NHANES cycle, and copper intake was estimated from diet rather than measured in blood, so the findings may not capture each person's true copper status.

The authors themselves note that the mechanisms behind the association, and the reasons it appeared only in women, remain to be explored. The published abstract does not disclose funding sources or conflicts of interest.

What to Do With This

Treat this as encouraging but early evidence that everyday nutrition and hearing health are connected. A balanced diet that naturally includes copper-rich foods is sensible for many reasons, and anyone concerned about their hearing, whatever their diet, is better served by a hearing test than by supplements, since the study offers no evidence that adding copper reverses hearing loss that already exists.
